Under 11s County Restricted
There was a disappointing entry for the County Under 11s Championships, with only six boys and six girls entering the events, which were played on a "round robin" basis to give the competitors plenty of games. But the games were close with both singles events ending in ties.
In the boys singles Tom Walden from Swanton Morley and Timothy Cary (Framingham Earl) won four games each, but Timothy was declared champion because he won his game against Tom 11-8. Seven year old Ben Sharman (Easton) finished in third place, having won a moderates tournament for Under 8s two weeks earlier - a county champion in the making.
In the girls singles there was a three way tie with Louise Thacker (Hellesdon), Laura Clarke (Drayton) and Amy Sharman (Easton) all winning four games, Louise took the title on points with Laura coming second.
Timothy Cary picked up his second title of the day, when he partnered Thomas Larnder (Framingham Earl) to victory in the level doubles. Tom Walden, who only started playing badminton three months ago,
and Ben Sharman were runners up.
Laura Clarke and Amy Sharman won the girls doubles, with Rebecca Goddard (Arminghall) and Louise Thacker in second place.
* The Over 40s county team had a nail biting away match against Notts in the Veterans League, which finished in a 6all tie, but with Notts winning 15-13 on count back. Linda Sawyer and Liz Cubitt had a great day, winning both their level doubles and their mixed, partnered by Eddie Simmons and Peter Rix respectively. Simmons and Steve Hacker shared their mens doubles, while Rix and Julian Sharman and Jenny Longmore and Suzanne Benton played well but with no success. Hacker and Longmore picked up Norfolks sixth game, winning a three set thriller, 17-14 in the third. Team captain, Suzanne Benton, was full of praise and thanks for the team, particularly as she was only able to complete the line-up twelve hours before the match began, due to the unavailability of three of the mens regulars.
* The County Juniors held their first Under 8s tournament to give the youngsters their first taste of competitive play and coupled this with an Under 10s moderates event. It was a good day, full of fun and excitement, just what is needed at that age The winners and runners up were:
