Norfolk Moderates Tournament

A bumper entry descended upon Easton College for the last badminton tournament of the season for non county players. With many new faces entering a tough competition was always possible, and as the day progressed this proved to be the case, as established and experienced pairs were challenged by some of the county's up and coming juniors.

With 22 pairs the mens doubles event was played in four groups, all of which were very close affairs with three of the group winners being decided by the final game. In the semi finals the YMCA pairing of Julian Sharman & Steve Newstead, beat Tom Legerton & Martin Harvey in a close match, whilst the Tasburgh pair of Simon Spaul & Tom McClure beat Kings Lynn's Mike Andrews & Mark Rager in the other semi final. The final was a pulsating affair, with the outcome never clear until the final few points when Spaul & McClure held their nerve to take victory.

The ladies doubles was played in one group, and proved to be equally as competitive as the men. All the games were very close, and it finished in a tree way tie for first place between Janet Marsden & Norma Bowen from Kings Lynn, the Norwich pairing of Sonia Barber & Andrea Berger, and the U17 pairing of Holly Bowen & Serena Verney. The result was victory for Barber & Berger by 1 point over the junior girls.

The afternoon saw 17 pairs contest the mixed doubles event. Played in 4 groups, the games were just as competitive as the morning session. In the first semi final Sharman & Berger beat the previous winners David Guy & Jeannine Roe, whilst in the other semi final Kevin Le Page and Liz Cubitt beat Ryan Folkard & Sonia Barber. In the final Le Page & Cubitt, made full use of their experience as their opponents tired to take the title.
